I was invited to play Auto Assault this weekend, in its beta stage. I should have been excited, as I've never been invited to participate in a beta before. However, this game merely deliverers more of the same. It is so similar to City of Heroes, that I might as well play that instead, where I already know a very fun crew I could play with.

Auto Assault wasn't all bad, it wasn't bat at all, in fact. It just wasn't very new in gameplay concept. Its the same old, get your mission, go beat up baddie, and grind up the level ladder. If I'm going to redirect my overpriced subscription fees to a game, it is going to need something innovative. It is going to need to grow beyond goals of committing genocide against millions of artificially intelligent antagonists.

There was a small token of new interest that the game gave to me. It was fun to drive around what basically amounts to an open, offroad playpen in my machine gun mounted car. I like racing games, and this was like a racing game without the race. I was able to drive away from the track and go where I wanted without concern for finding a finish line. I was able to drive off of cliffs and ruined hunks of road. The physics engine allowed me to crash up the scenery, knocking over roadsigns, telephone poles, shacks, and nearly any other structure I should crash my vehicle into. It was a wonderful orgy of destruction.

Candy like that goes away quickly, however. In the end there are two things that define an MMO: game mechanics and the friends you make. The graphics all become invisible by about the second week.
